10.26.06 | Morehouse College Brings the "House" Down "The Morehouse College Marching Band brings the crowd to their feet!"
This past Friday Night, the Morehouse College Marching Band, aptly named the "House of Funk," was unanimously voted as the winner of the Annual Silver Dollar Classic "Battle of the Bands" in Los Angeles, California! It was a somewhat hectic experience for the group, as they arrived in L.A. to begin their activities almost immediately upon landing. Having no opportunity to rest, the band members only had time to eat, check-in to their hotel rooms, and unpack before heading over to the L.A. Sports Arena for the Battle.
At the L.A. Sports Arena, the "House of Funk" was quoted as being the underdog of the competition, as the 200+ member Alcorn State University "Sounds of Dynomite" Marching Band heavily outnumbered Morehouse' Band in instrumentation. Whatever the Morehouse Band lacked in numbers, they more than made up for with intensity, technique, sound, and pride. By a unanimous decision from both the audience and the panel of judges, the Morehouse College Marching Band was named as the winner at the end of the evening. Congratulations to the "House of Funk!"
The Battle of the Bands was part of the Annual Silver Dollar Classic Weekend, which featured a host of events including a step-show, celebrity concert, a Pre-Game Football Game by Snoop Dogg's Pee-Wee Football Team, and the culminating College Football Game between the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers and the Alcorn State University Braves.

08.24.06 | **Benefits of the Band** Aside from the obvious travel opportunities, the Morehouse College Band Program provides its members with many other experiences which will ultimately benefit the student's college life.
1) The Band Program is a collaborative venture between Morehouse College and Spelman College, which affords the incoming student an easily-accessible, social pipeline to help facillitate the adjustment to college life. Often students are overwhelmed with their attempts to locate a suitable way to meet other students of similiar interest. The Bands are open to students of every major area of study and background, therefore the participants gain instant access to various cultures and social groups in a contained, and completely unintrusive enviroment.
2) Participation in the Band Program may qualify the student for extra financial assistance. We realize that college is an expensive investment, so we offer some financial assistance through our Talent Grant Award Program. Pending the results of a musical audition with the Director of Bands, band students may be eligible for a talent award up to $3000.00.
3) The band rehearsal Schedules will not interfere with the students' academic work! Often people assume that participation in the band will take too much time, and it will ultimately lead to poor academic performance. The truth is that the bulk of the band's preparation occurs during bandcamp, before school even begins. During the academic year, the ensembles practice no more than one and a half hours per weekday with the Director(s). This allows ample time for students to focus on their studies.
4) The Marching Band offers free tutoring for the members of the organization! Through our Academic Excellence Program, the band recently achieved an impressive, cumulative GPA of 3.42! To uphold the college's standard of excellence, we group our first year students with peers in their major area of study to help them develop effective study habits, while still maintaining their love for music.
4) The Morehouse College Band Program teaches skills which are necessary for success in an increasingly competitive job-market. Self-Discipline, Punctuality, Humility, and Time-Management Skills are some of the positive behaviors encouraged within the program. College is meant to prepare its students for life in real-world settings. To that end, the band program is a positive way to reinforce the habits which will lead to healthy and productive lifestyles.
